Yoga: SUP Yoga in Bali

On our first day off during the Yoga Teacher Training we went on an amazing trip to do some SUP (Standup Paddleboarding) and SUP Yoga in Sanur, Bali with Kite West Watersports and Tours.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0477.We all got picked up at Serenity Eco Guesthouse in Canggu in the morning to drive through Denpasar to Sanur. I can highly recommend Serenity Eco Guesthouse if you happened to stay in Canggu: beautiful, homey and comfortable place with great food at the Alkaline Restaurant.

For me it’s the first time in Indonesia and you have heard of the crazy traffic and scooters everywhere, but never expected it to be THAT insane. It was ilarious and fascinating to observe on our drive how it works, especially as a german it is hard to understand the craziness.

After a fresh coconut at the beach we grabbed our SUPs and  jumped on our boards with our instructor Ben. For the next 1,5 hours we just paddled through the bay, switching boards, falling off and just having a blast. Of course I fell off multiple times and also lost my beloved sunglasses, even though I got warned to be careful with them out there on the ocean. Oh well, I learned not to bet attached to objects in the YTT and already got a chance to practice it.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0463.Towards the end Ben challenged us to try some Yoga poses on the boards which basically always ended with someone falling into the water. Good thing we had our SUP Yoga session after our lunch break with Chantall from Kite West Watersports & Tours, to properly learn how to keep our balance in our asanas.

We loaded the SUPs on a typical balinese boat and drove out to a deserted and calmer bay for our Yoga lesson. Finally the sun came out and after anchoring the SUPs, we started with some seated poses and getting to know our body on the board on the water. Chantal was great in teaching us how to arrange our body and use our balance to come into more challenging poses. What a beautiful afternoon: sunshine, ocean, yoga, laughing and fresh air.

I completely fell in love with SUP Yoga here and there.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0427.It’s just a beautiful feeling balancing on the water, really recognizing if you put even pressure trough hands and feet and  having the sun shine on your face.
On the way back the tide was already too low for the boat to take us all the way back to the beach. So we each grabbed a SUP and paddled our way back to the shore. My shoulders were burning like fire and I thought I might just give up and spend the night on the SUP but I MADE IT, haha! Maybe with some help…

Of course everybody slept in the car on the way back and had a bit of a sunburn from being out on the water all day. But it was definitely worth it!

I can only recommend trying some SUP and SUP Yoga. If you happen to be in Bali, try to get a hold of Chantal and Ben from Kite West to book a session, they were amazing teachers and really took care of us in every way.
